Legends and folklore of merfolk span the centuries. As far back as the Babylonians and Assyrians people have worshipped and held fascination with the idea of merpeople. Known as sirens, these creatures would sit amongst the rocks on the sea shores and lure sailors to their deaths with their enchanting songs. Clever Odysseus devised a way that he could hear the Ethereal song without harm to himself or his sailors. He had all of his men fill their ears with wax and then he himself was strapped to the mast of the ship.
As they sailed past, his men could not hear the Siren's enchantment and he, Odysseus, was safely tied and his mad pleas to steer toward the sound of the Siren's Song were left unheeded.
