In old Norse culture there were the Völvas. They were highly revered and respected for their gifts. Völva translates to "wand carrier", "of the wand" or even "wand-wed". This wand references the distaff used by women for the purposes of spinning material like wool into thread.
The ancient magick of Seiðr practiced by Völvas was in direct relation to the Norns and their weaving of our fates. So to, this references the woman's domestic role of spinning and weaving thread into clothing. Völvas would seek to create new threads of fate with their wands, to altar the future, to bend fate to their will.
Spá, was the act of prophesying and integral to the magickal practice of the Völva.
Even the All-father, Odin, sought the wisdom and knowledge of Völvas. In the Völuspá Odin resserrects a Völva from the dead and implors her to share her memories and look to the future, to the fate of the Gods. She recounts the beginning and creation of all things. She tells Odin things only he knows, where his eye is, and further proves her power. Odin bestows upon her treasures and the Völva, far-seeing, tells the All-father of Ragnarök, the Twilight of the Gods.
